The Brigade of Library and Information Science Students organized a webinar entitled โInformation Literacy Program: Empowering the students with Library Technology Toolsโ on the second day of CICT Days 2022 (April 26, 2022) via Zoom Meetings and Facebook Livestream.
As a part of the opening ceremony, Ms. Maria Pretty Lay Abdala, the University Librarian, gave a short speech thanking the BLISS and CICT community for partaking in the CICT Days 2022. She also provided the outline of the webinar.
Ms. Abdala ended her speech with a short explanation of why Information Literacy is essential nowadays as she left a quote from the Bulgarian Politician Irina Bokova: โLiteracy is the door to knowledge, essential to the individualโs self-esteem and empowerment. So books in all forms play an essential role here.โ
The program had two parts: Tips and Tricks using Online Public Access Catalog and Upscaling Access in Library Databases.
The first part was led by the speaker Ms. Welsie Vergara, the Unit-head Librarian of CICT. Her discussion revolved around the three ways how they can find materials in the library. She also followed it with a short definition and history of the catalog.
The viewers were then introduced to the concept of the Open Public Access Catalog, where she pointed out the improvements of the already-existing OPAC in the university to keep track of its purpose amidst online Classes. The next part of her discussion was the OPACโs objectives and search terms or fields, which she explained could help a student gain access to a catalog much easier.
Based on her discussion, BulSuโs OPAC has three search options: The Basic/Quick/Simple Search, the Advanced/Expert search, and the Member search.
She concluded her presentation by providing tips and tricks on how to use BulSuโs OPAC for a more convenient catalog search. Some of the points tackled are: Using search words properly for better search results, checking the availability of a paper or a book and databases.
The second part of the webinar was presented by Mr. Gaudancio Dy, Bustos Campusโ Librarian. He was assigned the topic โUpscaling Access in Library Databasesโ.
His presentation discussed ideas such as the definition of open access, which he defined as freely available, digital, online information. He also talked about the different symbols of Creative Commons and their attributed meanings; Bulacan State University Library G-Sites, which he tackled the process of accessing; BulSu Aklatan and its user-friendly navigation; and the Universityโs Subscribed Databases which included some websites such as Science Direct, Scopus, ESCRA, Turnitin, Grammarly, and Emerald.
He finished his discussion by providing the social media links of Bulacan State Universityโs Library and pointing out the essence of information literacy.
โLahat naman ng information ay available, lahat naman ng information ay makikita natin, ano? With just one click and sa world of open access databases. It just so happen na kailangan nating isipin โyung term na โthink before you clickโ kasi kahit libre โyung information kung โdi tayo (inclined) sa Information Literacy, ang gagawin lang natin is click click click ano, specially โyung mga fakenews.โ
Shortly after Mr. Dy concluded his presentation, the organizers conducted a Q&A session where both speakers informatively answered all clarifications and questions from the viewers.
As the webinar reached its end, the Brigade of Library and Information Science Students President, Mr. Clinton Santiago, gave a speech. He gave his peers, their partners, the attendees, speakers, alumni, and CICTโs Dean, Mr. Keno Piad, gratitude for the successful run of the webinar.
โHopefully, this is not the last that we will have something like this. Expect us to continue to improve and expand our program, in order to give high-quality service not only to CICT, but also to a wider BulSu Community,โ said Santiago.
The hosts gave thanks to all the viewers and the program ended right after the BulSu March presentation.
